SUMMARY:Living History Series: A Debate between John Adams & Thomas Jefferson

They recall their bumpy collaboration on the Declaration of Independence in 1776\, parting ways on its final content and even on the most appropriate date for commemorating American independence. They clash on Constitutional issues such as term limits\, freedom of speech\, Presidential powers\, the Tenth Amendment\, the First Amendment\, as well as the virtues & vexations of a two-party system. By means of this dialogue between their differing visions for The United States\, their contrasting views of human nature\, and their political careers that interweaved collaboration & opposition\, our 2nd and 3rd Presidents find the common ground that inspired Benjamin Rush to dub them “rival friends”. \n  \nThis is a debate\, but not one fueled by party animosity or reciprocal hatred. Rather it is fueled by a shared love of America\, seasoned with passionate\, diverging beliefs regarding how best to protect & foster the nation these two men helped to found. \n  \n“On the question\, What is the best provision? you and I differ; but we differ as rational friends\, using the free exercise of our own reason\, and mutually indulging it’s errors.” —Thomas Jefferson to John Adams: October 28\, 1813 \n  \nSaturday\, February 8th\, 2025\n11 am \nTaylor Pavilion\, 500 Ocean Ave. N\, Belmar \n  \n  \nFREE & OPEN to the public \nSeating limited\, registration required  \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1735483771741{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column fix_column=”” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” icons_position=”left” css=”.vc_custom_1735407634847{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE” style=”classic” color=”info” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FsJ29BLufXrowrgZx7https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FnAe4K5hsnuNBSjFo7|title:Living%20History%20Series%3A%20John%20Adams%20and%20Thomas%20Jefferson|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Frequently\nthreatened\, beaten\, whipped\, and starved\, Ms. Tubman’s indomitable spirit could not be broken.\nSuffering from a head wound incurred when a furious overseer aimed a two-pound weight at\nanother slave\, but missed\, Harriet Tubman suffered from seizures for the rest of her life. But\neven this daunting physical obstacle could not keep her from her freeing herself and freeing\nothers from slavery. A Union spy during the Civil War as well as a nurse\, Ms. Tubman directed\nher consider energies towards humanitarian causes that included women’s suffrage after the war. \nDr. Daisy Century considers Harriet Tubman her role model\, someone who encouraged her\nto put others first and to lead by example. Like her inspiration\, Daisy grew up on a farm\, has a\nwonderful singing voice and is a determined woman of conviction: once they start a project\, they\nmust see it through to completion. Harriet Tubman reveals a woman who made up her mind as a\nyoung girl that things could be better than they were\, “I had reasoned this out in my mind. There\nwas one of two things I had a right to – liberty or death. If I could not have one\, I would have the\nother.” Tubman shows us a woman who found freedom for herself and then made sure others\nwere brought to freedom. The brave woman who rescued more than seventy slaves using the\nUnderground Railroad declared\, “I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.”\nHarriet Tubman takes each and every audience member along for this ride. \n  \nABOUT THE ACTOR \nDr. Daisy Century recalls the thrill of receiving a standing ovation for her 3rd grade recitation of\nThe Creation and credits this as the beginning of her desire to perform. Trained as a teacher\, Dr.\nCentury earned a BA in Biology at Claflin College\, a Master’s in Science Education from South\nCarolina University and a PhD from Temple University\, also in Science Education. This\nnaturally talented teacher and actor couples scientific methods with creative imagination in order\nto discover how the historical characters she interprets would respond to a given situation. An\ninspiring educator whose students have returned year after year to thank Dr. Century for the\ndifference she has made in their lives\, Daisy has continued to inspire through her thoroughly-\nresearched\, dramatically intense portrayals. Dr. Century is a published author\, writing under the\nname Emily Nelson\, and is an accomplished singer. \nDr. Century contacted the American Historical Theatre and auditioned for AHT founders Pamela\nand William Sommerfield in 1999. Since then\, Daisy has appeared in venues that include the\nNational Defense Organization\, Belmont Mansion\, National Archives\, Sojourner Truth House\,\nTheodore Roosevelt National Historic Site\, the Helicopter Museum\, and numerous schools\,\nlibraries\, museums and historic sites throughout New Jersey. \n [/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/9v0Bxr1_SMc?si=tIkAdZQDsBbYqp6F” el_width=”70″ align=”center”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT” color=”mulled-wine” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FuCZenUwai5LkqwVaA|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His accomplishments were\nplentiful and diverse: War hero to Nobel Peace Prize winner\, Naturalist to\nImperialist. \nThe 36th president of the United States promoted progressivism\nand strong government control of business. Roosevelt’s domestic political\nagenda was described as a “Square Deal”; emphasizing his commitment to\nensure that the average citizen would get a “fair share”. \nBelieving that the security of the American People would be achieved through leadership on\nthe World Stage\, President Roosevelt ensured that the influence of the\nUnited States would grow to span the globe. The slogan “Speak softly and\ncarry a big stick\, and you will go far” lives on well beyond the life of this\nremarkable man. \n  \nABOUT THE ACTOR \nPeyton Dixon \nAfter receiving his BFA in Theatre Performance from Otterbein College\, Peyton traveled\nacross the country on the gypsy-like journey as an actor. While in Philadelphia\, he was\nintroduced to the world of first-person interpretation\, and found an exciting new world of sharing\nhistory through a personal lens. Peyton has been seen portraying historic figures for the\nRepublican National Convention\, Independence National Historical Park\, and the National\nArchives\, and appearing in documentaries on A&E and PBS. \nPeyton has been a part of American Historical Theatre since 2001. He continues to\nresearch and travel\, endeavoring to combine his passions of performance and American history.\nHis goal is to bring to light the accomplishments as well as the imperfections of our founders\,\nframers\, and other famous figures. Look beyond the statue\, bring them off the pedestal\naltogether\, and see the very real everyman beneath. \n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/Pv6vYta4Xqw?si=OB_K2jJLJcM4PsGC” el_width=”70″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/GVdYbW-infg?si=IKF8FLM5wFQRk6_k” el_width=”70″ align=”center”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FqeGyk41LYi5oAcMs5|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The goals and\naspirations stated in the first inaugural address were a mission statement and\npromise to the American people that his term would be about restoring the Union ina way that would benefit ALL Americans. \nThe program will open the door as to how Grant campaigned for the\npresidency and how as chief executive he met and closed with the established\npoliticians\, who underestimated Grant for his political acumen. Life for Grant and his family was changed forever\, and there are stories to tell from all sides of his time as President. There was much to be proud of that resulted from his leadership in the Executive Mansion\, and he knew there was still much to be done\, not just for the south\, but for the recently enfranchised “Freedmen”\, as well as the Natives of our land. \nYou will have an opportunity to discuss in person with the 18 th president how he perceived the challenges not just for him\, but for the nation as a whole in the first election following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.\nWhen guests come to understand the uphill battle Grant willingly accepted\,\nthey will also begin to see how great his accomplishments were given the nature of an outsider holding the reigns and doing the will of the people and not becoming a professional politician. \n  \nABOUT THE ACTOR \n  \nGunnery Sgt Kenneth J. Serfass (USMC Retired) is a native of Bethlehem\, PA born on June 18th\, 1966.  A US Marine since 1984\, his last unit was the First Marine Division Band during Operation Iraqi Freedom\, retiring in July of 2004 to become a music teacher.   \nKen is a former civil war “reenactor” but now a first-person impressionist with fifty years studying his childhood hero\, US Grant.  As a full-time professional living historian portraying Grant\, he presents between 11 and up to 23 appearances each month between February and November.  Ken began appearing as General Grant in 2009 while living in San Diego CA\, and since returning to the east coast\, he is engaged on horseback tours\, rail road excursions\, presenting school programs\, living history and roundtable events\, speaking at public libraries on a regular basis\, and annually in Southern California at Huntington Beach’s Civil War Days over Labor Day weekend.  \nHis repertoire includes programs on Grant’s battle campaigns\, his interactions with Lincoln\, Sherman\, and Lee\, and most importantly\, the Grant family\, and the two terms as the 18th US President.  This led to being cast as President Grant for a documentary featured on Fox Nation\, debuting October 10\, 2021. \nIt is with a profound honor that he tells the story of one of America’s greatest military leaders and Ken takes it very seriously to reaffirm Grant’s place of honor among the most respected people of our nation’s history.   \n [/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT” color=”chino” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FVfP1o3FAT3M1sDK76|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
