Experience the voice that captured the essence of Black America during the Harlem Renaissance. \nHughes transformed American literature by infusing his poetry with jazz and the blues\, using the language of everyday life. His work related the real experiences of Black Americans while challenging divisions within the Black community itself\, including colorism and class prejudice. \nIn his portrayal\, Keith Henley explores Hughes’ artistic journey and a message of self-acceptance and personal empowerment. Audiences will be moved by Hughes’ timeless inspiration that everyone has “a song to sing” and that they should deeply consider the question: “Why not me?” \nThis final installment in our Living History series offers a chance to connect with the artist who gave voice to Black America during a transformative era in America’s cultural history. \n \nSaturday\, April 18th\, 2026 @ noon \nBelmar Public Library\n517 Tenth Ave\, Belmar \n \nFREE & OPEN to the public \nSeating limited\, registration required \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1735483771741{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column fix_column=”” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” icons_position=”left” css=”.vc_custom_1735407634847{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE” style=”classic” color=”green” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:%20https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2F8fh3KNsZhAZ7HGqJ7|title:Living%20History%3A%20Langston%20Hughes|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/c3ilcljVsVY?si=4FB7235641_XqvcQ” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Kim Hanley brings to life this extraordinary Revolutionary War figure who transcended traditional gender roles on the battlefield. \nOriginally accompanying her husband to war\, Mary took on the vital role of water carrier\, bringing life-saving refreshment to soldiers and cooling overheated cannons during battle. But at the pivotal Battle of Monmouth in 1778\, when her husband fell wounded at his artillery post\, Mary did the unthinkable—she stepped forward to take his place\, operating the cannon with skill throughout the fierce fighting. \nThis remarkable act of courage earned her the personal commendation of General George Washington himself\, who granted her the honorary rank of Sergeant. Eyewitness accounts describe her remarkable composure even when enemy fire tore through her petticoat! \nJoin us for this interactive historical presentation perfect for grade schoolers. Young visitors will participate in hands-on activities including learning drum cadences\, loading a mock “cannon” with period household items\, and experiencing some of the lighter moments of camp life through dancing and singing. \n \n \nThursday\, April 2nd\, 2026 @ 6 pm \nTaylor Pavilion\, 500 Ocean Ave. N\, Belmar \n \nFREE & OPEN to the public \nSeating limited\, registration required \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1735483771741{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column fix_column=”” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” icons_position=”left” css=”.vc_custom_1735407634847{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE” style=”classic” color=”green” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2Fj27xjxui97TyMyeK8|title:Living%20History%3A%20Molly%20Pitcher|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Dr. Daisy Century brings to life this determined pioneer who overcame tremendous obstacles to achieve her dreams. \nBorn in Texas to a family of sharecroppers\, Coleman’s path to the skies was anything but straightforward. After working multiple jobs to fund her education through 8th grade and a brief stint at Oklahoma Colored Agricultural Normal University\, she set her sights on aviation—a field completely closed to Black women in America. Undeterred\, she learned French\, moved to France\, and earned her pilot’s license in just 8 months. \nDr. Century’s dynamic portrayal captures Coleman’s incredible journey\, thrilling barnstorming adventures\, and parachute stunts that captivated audiences in the 1920s. This performance will inspire attendees of all ages with the story of a woman who refused to let racial and gender barriers ground her dreams. \n \nSaturday\, March 14th\, 2026 @ noon \nTaylor Pavilion\, 500 Ocean Ave. N\, Belmar \n \nFREE & OPEN to the public \nSeating limited\, registration required \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/gR9Ci4jES20?si=9PHnS9HXPHzZ1DOa ” css=””][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1735483771741{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column fix_column=”” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” icons_position=”left” css=”.vc_custom_1735407634847{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE” style=”classic” color=”green” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FHHX9S3RQHNQ3fub38|title:Living%20History%3A%20Bessie%20Coleman|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

An ardent believer in the potential of all girls and the importance of fostering their individual growth\, character\, and self-sufficiency\, Juliette is credited with establishing and nurturing a global movement that has changed the world.Birth of a Movement.\nA meeting in 1912 with Sir Robert Baden-Powell\, the founder of Boy Scouts\, inspired Juliette to establish Girl Scouts that same year. Telephoning a cousin from her home\, she announced\, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah\, and all of America\, and all the world\, and we’re going to start it tonight!” \nFrom that first gathering of a small troop of 18 culturally and ethnically diverse girls\, Juliette broke the conventions of the time—reaching across class\, cultural\, and ethnic boundaries to ensure all girls\, including those with so-called disabilities\, had a place to grow and develop their leadership skills. Using her innate talent for fundraising and public relations\, combined with her vast network of friends and supporters\, she led Girl Scouts with passion and determination—ensuring it was\, and always would be\, an experience that was “girl led.” \nSaturday\, March 7th\, 2026 @ noon \nTaylor Pavilion\, 500 Ocean Ave. N\, Belmar \n \nFREE & OPEN to the public \nSeating limited\, registration required \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/EpfCAdt-5ec?si=j_xjhWD3pfN020qp” css=””][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1735483771741{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column fix_column=”” hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” icons_position=”left” css=”.vc_custom_1735407634847{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE” style=”classic” color=”green” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FEb8tV7CJiwRVz354A|title:Living%20History%3A%20Juliette%20Gordon%20Low|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_empty_space hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Living History Series: Sojourner Truth
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″ hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” icons_position=”left” css=”.vc_custom_1740714923965{padding-right: 30px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”108px” hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1740719382432{padding-right: 30px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;}”] \nSojourner Truth\nPortrayed by Daisy Century\nBorn Isabella Baumfree\, the slave from a small town north of New York City changed hands several times\, sold by one brutal owner to another just as harsh. Her life included repeated beatings\, rapes and a forced marriage. In 1826\, having been promised freedom\, but then cruelly denied emancipation\, she left her current owners and found her way to the Van Wageners’ home. There she had an epiphany\, became a devout Christian\, and renamed herself Sojourner Truth\, after which she began her travels as a preacher. In 1850\, Sojourner began speaking on women’s suffrage\, believing the causes of abolition and women’s rights to be intertwined and equally important. Ms. Truth’s most quoted speech\, “Ain’t I a Woman?” was delivered at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in Akron\, Ohio.\nAlthough there has been much dispute about the words she spoke and the rhythm of her speech\, there is no debate about the power and integrity of the speaker or about the impact of the speech and the speaker’s life. Truth also helped recruit black troops during the Civil War for the Union Army\, and she worked as a Union nurse.\nDr. Daisy Century and Ms. Sojourner Truth are both powerful singers and very intelligent women\, whether self-taught or academically trained. Almost as impressively tall as the woman she portrays\, Century gives a commanding performance of Ms. Truth\, bringing to life a woman undeterred by incredible obstacles\, a woman who mixed with the leading figures of her day\, including Susan B. Anthony\, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Audience members are urged to consider the twin goals of racial and gender parity of equal importance. We are inspired by Ms. Truth’s fiery wit\, as exemplified by her rejoinder to a comment that since she smoked a pipe (at one time)\, her conduct did not reflect cleanliness being next to godliness. Said Sojourner\, “When I die\, I expect to leave my breath behind.” The audience has the opportunity to sign Sojourner Truth’s Book of Life\, signifying their connection to Ms. Truth’s legacy. \nDaisy Century\, EdD.:\nDr. Daisy Century recalls the thrill of receiving a standing ovation for her 3rd grade recitation of The Creation and credits this as the beginning of her desire to perform. Trained as a teacher\, Dr. Century earned a BA in Biology at Claflin College\, a Master’s in Science Education from South Carolina University and a PhD from Temple University\, also in Science Education. This naturally talented teacher and actor couples scientific methods with creative imagination in order to discover how the historical characters she interprets would respond to a given situation. An inspiring educator whose students have returned year after year to thank Dr. Century for the difference she has made in their lives\, Daisy has continued to inspire through her thoroughly-researched\, dramatically intense portrayals. Dr. Century is a published author\, writing under the name Emily Nelson\, and is an accomplished singer. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”44px” hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE TO GET YOUR E-TICKET” style=”classic” color=”primary” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FKNER9Tvs9qp9EfLs8|title:Living%20History%3A%20Sojourner%20Truth|target:_blank”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

General Grant enjoys a reputation as a fine horseman\, but it’s not just flesh and blood horses\, but the Iron Horse as well that Grant appreciates. In this meeting with the Lincoln’s General In Chief\, he will give some background on the development of rail roads in America during his own formative years\, and will describe how the nation and its rail roads grew up together\, in those tumultuous years of the American Civil War. Gen. Grant will relate his own experiences with trains and railroading from his youth through becoming the victor of the civil war through stories and artifacts from the period.\n\nIf you are a fan of US history\, no matter a student of the civil war\, or America’s rail roads\, or life in the 1800’s\, this encounter will engage and cross over to many areas of interest.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”44px” hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE TO GET YOUR E-TICKET” style=”classic” color=”primary” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FxPGU4RCZfaFietDs7|title:General%20Grant%20and%20Civil%20War%20Rail%20Roads|target:_blank”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Living History Series: Amelia Earhart
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1739818238238{padding-right: 30px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;}”] \nThis outstanding flyer has amazed at the public with daring voyages over sea and land\, proving that one individual can achieve what has been considered the unachievable!\nHer record-breaking accomplishments have made her the heroine of men and women all over the world.\nAnd now\, in a special press conference to discuss her upcoming flight around the world\, we are pleased to present the country is most recognizable spokeswoman for the field of Aviation\, Miss Amelia Earhart.\nAmelia Earhart continues to fascinate and to inspire. The charismatic\, athletic\, risk-taking tomboy could charm you with her sparkling eyes\, motivate you with her passion\, could convince you with her skill. Although she was born in Kansas\, Ms. Earhart had solid Philadelphia connections: Amelia attended the Ogontz School\, now part of Penn State University\, flew a piper cub from Coatesville and spoke about aviation in Germantown. Ms. Earhart was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to actually flying\, she wrote aviation books\, helped form the Ninety-Nines to support other female pilots\, and taught classes at Purdue University’s aviation department. Earhart was active in the political arena as a member of the National Woman’s Party and as a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. A friend to Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt\, Ms. Earhart took Eleanor flying after FDR told her he didn’t want Eleanor piloting a plane. Pat Jordan has also flown a plane and like Amelia\, she enjoys exploration and adventure. \nPat Jordan is an accomplished actor\, operatic singer and historian. She has worked with the American Historical Theatre since 1992. She earned a degree in theatre from Villanova\, training at Juilliard Opera Workshops\, and has had years of experience with the German Theatre Guild and AHT\, Ms. Jordan’s roles have included Shakespearean heroines\, Victorian Music Hall comediennes\, and opera divas. A devoted teacher\, Pat has led history camps\, taught at the Institute for the Gifted and at Bryn Mawr College. She was honored in 2009 by the Darlington Arts Center for her many years of teaching as part of the award-winning Chester Youth Theatre Outreach Program. \nPat Jordan has appeared at venues that include the White House Visitors Center\, Library of Congress\, Smithsonian Institute\, National Archives\, Franklin Institute\, Peddler’s Village (Cock & Bull Restaurant)\, National Constitution Center\, Union League\, National Portrait Gallery\, Deshler-Morris House and at Mount Vernon. Pat has performed this program in venues throughout the United States giving voice to the stories of this courageous\, inspirational woman. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”108px” hide_on_wide=”” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER HERE TO GET YOUR E-TICKET” style=”classic” color=”primary” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FEdmADDbWJk6JbXLHA|target:_blank”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″ icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
