The Belmar Public Library is excited to present the 2024 Annual St. Patrick’s Day Irish Celebration and Soda Bread Contest!
The event will held Thursday, March 14 at 5 pm at the Taylor Pavilion, located at 500 Ocean Ave., Belmar, NJ.
The event will feature an Irish Step-Dancing performance by the D’Arcy School of Irish Dance in Wall, NJ, refreshments and the return of our Annual Soda Bread Contest!
The rules and links to register for the Soda Bread Contest are below. Please read them carefully before entering.
Seating at the event will be limited, so we are asking all who wish to attend to please register with us.
As always, entry to our contest and attendance to the event is FREE and OPEN to all.
There are TWO Registration links: one to enter the contest, and one to simply attend the event. Please select the correct link to Register.
Contest Rules:
There will be TWO contests this year: Standard White Soda Bread and Brown Bread.
Each contest will have a maximum 20 entries each.
Contestants may enter either one or both.
Contestants must register via the Belmar Public Library website or in person at the Library.
Deadline for registration is Monday, March 13, 7 pm.
Rules for Standard White Sodabread
This is a contest for Traditional Irish Sodabread.
Entries in this division must contain these four ingredients:
•White flour
•Soured milk
•Baking Soda (also called bread soda & sodium bicarbonate)
•Salt
While additional ingredients may be used without restriction, entries must still be soda bread.
No yeast-risen breads will be allowed.
Also, do not “glorify” the bread so much that is becomes a cake.
The judges should be able to recognize your entry as a loaf of bread and not a cake.
Contestants must register on the Library’s Website or in person at the Library.
Registration deadline is: Monday, March 11, 2024 7 PM
Maximum # contestants: 20
Entries should be delivered to Taylor Pavilion between 3 and 5 pm, Thursday March 14, prior to start of the event.
Failure to follow these rules may result in disqualification.
Rules for Brown Bread
This is a contest for Brown Sodabread.
Entries in this division contain these four ingredients:
•Whole wheat flour (no white flour allowed)
•Soured milk
•Baking soda (also called bread soda & sodium bicarbonate)
•Salt
While additional ingredients may be used without restriction, entries must still be soda bread.
No yeast-risen breads will be allowed.
Also, do not “glorify” the bread so much that is becomes a cake.
The judges should be able to recognize your entry as a loaf of bread and not a cake.
Contestants must register on the Library’s Website or in person at the Library.
Registration deadline is: Monday, March 11, 2024, 7 PM
Maximum # contestants: 20

PRIZES
The decision of the judges will be accepted as final.
Each contest will have its own set of Awards:
1st Prize : $50 Gift card, Trophy and Bragging rights
2nd Prize: Trophy and Bragging rights
3rd Prize: Trophy and Bragging rights
Honorable Mention: Trophy and bragging rights
Winners should be prepared to have their picture taken by the press and library staff. Anyone with issues about this must alert Luis Pulido in advance by either calling the Library, or emailing him at lpulido@belmar.com.
